HISTORY

HOW EVERYTHING BEGAN

Croatian Sahara with its mini zoo is a real tourist attraction that attracts more and more visitors from all over Croatia every day. The phenomenon of sands prompted the idea of establishing a zoo, and in order to emphasize the sands themselves first animals we brought here were camels. In 2016, the first three camels arrived in Đurđevac, a one-humped male and a two-humped female with their cub, and a year later another male. With the help of the citizens, the camels were given appropriate names, Tomica, Dina, Đurđica and Romeo. The camels came to Đurđevac from Germany, and they were placed just in front of the Old Town fortress in the dwellings of the Croatian Sahara, which were made especially for them. They are cared for by a team of specially trained groomers who have undergone special training on a camel farm in Austria.

GOOD TO KNOW
ANIMAL WORLD

Our camels Romeo, Tomica, Đurđica, Bella, Dudica, and Čelik have won many hearts with their gentleness and charm, and they are frequent guests on numerous national TV shows.

Alongside them, at the Croatian Sahara you can meet a rich and diverse animal community: five Bactrian (two-humped) camels, one dromedary (one-humped) camel, five miniature sheep, five miniature goats, two llamas, three ponies, three donkeys, a hawk, an eagle, two emus, and numerous chickens, guinea fowls, ducks, geese, and peacocks.

Our small zoo is a true haven for playful animals that delight visitors of all ages, and we are soon planning to open the Podravina Oasis — a space dedicated to sheltering other native animal species adapted for interaction with children.

Our animals are waiting for you

We currently have about 50 animals in the mini zoo, and we are constantly working on procuring new ones.
